Rain, rain, won't go awaaaay

Thursday, January 31, 2013

In Surabaya, the rainy season has officially arrived! That means every afternoon, like clockwork, the sky cracks open and douses us. It's muuuuch more preferable to the snow, ice, and wind in -19C (-2F) Boise.

Sometimes if it rains long enough, the street and artificial ditch/river thing in front of the house floods. Although the water is always gone by morning, for those few hours of late afternoon and night, driving becomes a hassle and splashing around in puddles takes on a whole new meaning...

However, after I played in the water for the first time and then later suffered from a multitude of itchy bug bits on my legs, I think I'll stick to ogling at the water from the front doorway.

On a flood-related note, recently Jakarta has suffered massive flooding. My heart goes out to all the victims. Hopefully the government will take this as a wakeup call and improve their preventative measures so people's lives won't be disrupted again.

  1. Your blog is such a nice read, it makes me want to visit indonesia. I saw your blog on cultures shocked (I studied in france a few years ago). I especially liked your "you know you've gone native" post. very fun. :) Since my exchange, I've been working on a site for exchange students. If you want to add advice for others on the site, feel free. the page is at http://www.study-abroad-secrets.com/study-abroad-advice-submissions.html . I'm sure you would have a ton of great things to add. Enjoy the rest of your exchange!!
